With his own death fast approaching – the doctors had given him just weeks to live – Mahler summed up his innermost feelings on life and death in what was to be the last symphony he was ever to complete. While Alban Berg suggested that the first movement “is permeated with the premonition of death”, this is far from a morbid work and makes a brilliant showcase for a large and able orchestra; ideal, in other words, for the MPO under Claus Peter Flor.
