Anna Salleh @ No Black Tie, Jalan Mesui, Off Jalan Raja Chulan, Kuala Lumpurposted by 671123

Sydney-based singer and guitarist, Anna Salleh returns to No Black Tie this June and July to present a night of gorgeous songs from Brazil and beyond.
Anna was first captivated by the beauty of Brazilian music as a child, when she saw the film Black Orpheus. It introduced her to the enchanting world that is bossa nova and much more. Over the years, Anna’s vocals have featured in a cappella groups, jazz bands and improvised theatre from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur and the Edinburgh Festival. And last year, she was drawn to Rio de Janeiro and the mystique that is Brazilian music. During three months in Brazil, Anna sought out the heritage of iconic songs like The Girl from Ipanema. She wanted to get beyond their image as cocktail-lounge and elevator music. Anna performed with local musicians, sought out the wisdom of bossa nova elders and other teachers, and broadened her repertoire to include other styles of Brazilian music including samba and choro. Earlier this year she made a radio documentary for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Into the Music program about her journey of musical discovery in Brazil. “Gorgeous Songs from Brazil and Beyond” presents a selection of well-loved and rare gems from Brazil, including songs that Anna collected while she was in Rio. And the treasure trove is enhanced by delicious sprinklings from jazz and other genres.
Anna and guitar will be joined by the wonderful talents of John Dip Silas on piano, Fly on bass and Soh Wen Ming on percussion.
From bossa nova to blues, be prepared for an experience that is honey smooth, intimate and lush.
