Equinox Flower (Higanbana, 1958) was the late Yasujiro Ozu’s first film in color. The film is based on a novel by Ton Satomi.
Wataru Hirayama, the protagonist of the film, is a wealthy businessman who acts as a go-between for couples seeking arranged marriage, but is both unprepared and unhappy when his daughter decides to make wedding plans on her own. He had always expected his daughter to seek his permission before she got married, and even assumed she would have him chose her husband for her in keeping with tradition.
But his daughter continues with her plans, and a collision of culture and generation soon ensues.
