This year, artists Gabrielle Bates (Australia) and Sharon Chin (Malaysia) will present new works as a result of their time spent in Balik Pulau, Penang, where the residency is located.

Australian artist Gabrielle Bates is no stranger to making art in Malaysia, having completed a residency at Rimbun Dahan in Kuala Lumpur last year. In her new paintings and collages created at Malihom, Bates combines curiosities from Southeast Asian collections with local superstition to ask; what happens to the spirit of things when we collect them?
